There are numerous software programs and manual techniques you can use to secure your computer, but when it comes to physically securing your laptop while you’re travelling, here are some tips.

1. Don’t use a computer bag. Buy a padded laptop cover and carry your computer in a small carry-on suitcase.

2. Encrypt your data. With Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 you can choose to encrypt files and folders.

3. Buy a lock. These aren’t very expensive, and there are even programs that can report the location of your laptop if it’s stolen. They work when the laptop connects to the Internet.

4. Use a screen guard.

5. Use the “Do Not Disturb” sign if you leave your laptop in your hotel room. Ideally, you should bring your laptop with you everywhere — but this is not always possible.

If you find that your computer security efforts have failed you, there are usually ways to restore data and repair your computer. For experts in Boston computer repair, visit A+ Mobile PC Doctors on the web. Or call us today at 1-617-723-1986 to speak with one of our technicians.

As a PC-to-Mac convert, I have nothing against Apple computers in general. I love how easy it is to find my files, I love how pretty Tiger is to look at, and I love iPhoto and iMovie. My past gripe was that Apple computers are ridiculously overpriced — which is now a bit out of date due to the company’s more recent recession-proof pricing.

The one complaint that I still have about Apple is its terrible customer service and repair system. They overcharge, they make you wait, and, let’s be honest, who really wants to lug their broken laptop into the mall on a busy Saturday afternoon? What really angers me is that they overcharge because they CAN.

In a recent article, Gizmodo.com points out that high fees are the LEAST of the company’s vices. Turns out, I’m not the only one to have experienced the fine print of the Apple Care warranty, extra-long waiting periods, and overall crappy customer service.

For reliable Apple laptop repair, A+ Mobile PC Doctors is one of the most experienced and trusted companies for computer repair in Boston. We promise to stand by our time estimates, treat you and your computer as you SHOULD be treated, and offer a competitive fee for repairs. Take a look at our website to see all of the services that we offer, and see how far our national computer repair coverage expands.

Hackers have turned to Twitter to spread malicious websites over the Internet, which could put your computer at risk for getting a virus.

Because Tweets are limited to 140 characters, many Twitter users convert their links to a shorter URL with the use of websites such as http://url4t.com/. This turns even the most universally recognized URL, Google.com, into the unrecognizable short link http://url4t.com/_5C. Hackers have taken advantage of this feature by creating Twitter accounts solely for the purpose of marketing malicious websites.

Before you click on a link within a Tweet, make sure you know that the account is legitimate. Better yet, avoid clicking short links from Twitter accounts that you do not follow. Also, use precaution when clicking on links within ReTweets — hackers often search for legitimate tweets and then ReTweet them with a different, malicious URL. For more tips regarding Twitter security, you can follow Spam at http://twitter.com/spam.

Naturally, the best underlying defense against computer viruses is installing (and frequently updating) a security system on your computer. Not all computer security software is created equal, so consider getting advice from someone you know about which to purchase. After years of virus removal experience, A+ Mobile PC Doctors has found that AVG Internet Security 9.0 outperforms all other brands of Internet security systems. If you find that your laptop has indeed contracted a virus, don’t hesitate to contact A+ Mobile PC Doctors, an experienced Boston computer repair company. Outside of Massachusetts, we are also offer national computer repair services for commercial and residential clients.
